Jin punched the control wall at Reclamation Factory Two. The chip had been connected to diagnostics for nineteen minutes.

Sena asked from a City Seven transport, “Can you open it?”

“Remote commands invert. An open command may lock it.”

“Manual shaft?”

Pressure Door Six lay 7.3 kilometers from the factory. One hour, forty minutes on foot, then at least forty-nine minutes to restore pressure and send the capsule.

Cutting: 2 hours, 55 minutes.

Margin: 26 minutes.

Jin volunteered to run. Luis stopped her.

“You have to watch the chip.”

“What good is watching from here?”

“To know if the next door inverts.”

Luis still limped after the outer-wall journey. Even at a normal gait, he was slower.

Bek stood.

The black spot beneath the resin on his shin had widened to the size of a coin. Sarah did not prohibit outside exposure. She explained the risk again.

“If infection, pipe water may worsen it. If toxicity, exercise can spread it through increased blood flow.”

“If I don’t go?”

“The eastern boundary is more likely to be cut.”

“That isn’t my medical risk.”

“Which is why I can’t compare the values for you.”

Bek packed the anti-inflammatory and fresh resin.

“I won’t hide it this time either.”

He left for the pressure door.

The Relay Station Five convoy traveled at seventeen kilometers per hour. The lead tank was empty. Six vehicles behind carried carbon membrane, metal powder, and nitrates for City Three.

The convoy changed destination without discarding cargo.

Estimated field arrival: 2 hours, 39 minutes.

Fourteen minutes before cutting.

Without reflector film, they had no way to stop the equipment.

In City Seven, Sena and four outer-wall workers boarded an underground thermal-pipe inspection car. Twenty-three kilometers on the surface took more than four hours. Inside the pipe rail: two hours, thirty-one minutes.

There were three seats. Two workers tied themselves to tool racks.

Before departure, six citizens blocked the car. Human preservationists who demanded that the cutters not be obstructed.

“If roots break the thermal pipe, City Seven loses cooling.”

Sena answered, “Cut them now and spores reach the city.”

“A possibility.”

“So is pipe failure in eight days.”

“What equipment fixes it then?”

They did not seize Sena’s car. They said they would take the next on the same rail.

“What will you do at the site?”

“Guard the cutting until completion.”

Five Bloom transition supporters gathered behind them. They planned to shut down the equipment and feed biological coolant to the root.

Three anti-central-control pipe workers planned to cut both cars’ communication lines and prevent all site commands.

Four purposes entered one rail.

Over public communications, Sena confirmed the names and goals of those following.

The preservation representative was Theo Yun, a thermal-pipe cooling worker of eighteen years who lived in Sector Four with a wife who refused symbiotic transition.

“If the root stops the pipe, my wife’s artificial-lung cooling fails first.”

The Bloom representative was Nev. His brother had an external respiratory membrane and was waiting for a place in Sector Six’s independent oxygen room.

“Cut the forest and release spores, and my brother becomes an isolation subject even inside the city.”

The pipe-worker representative was Hakim. Excluded three times from Forge rations, he maintained a manual well outside the city.

“Whichever side wins, every future valve answers only to that layer.”

Sena said, “On site, I issue work stops.”

Theo asked, “Who gave you authority?”

“Twelve years repairing the pipe.”

“That’s expertise, not authority.”

“Right. If I stop work, I’ll publish the reason. If you reject it, choose differently in front of me.”

Nev said, “We need the right to stop cutting living tissue.”

“When only the root is in danger.”

“Who decides danger?”

“Measurements.”

Hakim laughed.

“Sent by Aegis equipment?”

Sena had no immediate answer.

They agreed not to use one sensor. Work stopped only if two of three—city heat gauge, Bloom biopressure gauge, independent mechanical strain gauge—showed danger.

The agreement broke seven minutes later.

Theo demanded that the cutting threshold be a condition to proceed, not stop. Nev demanded that a biological-pressure warning alone block cutting. Hakim wanted all instruments detached from the central network.

They agreed on one sentence only.

IF A PERSON FALLS, ALL WORK STOPS.

It decided ownership of neither pipe nor forest.

So everyone could sign.

Sena left first. Two maintenance cars followed at seven-minute intervals.

Elias did not prevent departure. Aegis classified the cutting as safety, but did not request authority to restrict citizen movement.

Aegis said, “FIELD CONFLICT EXPECTED.”

Noah asked, “So lock the door?”

CONFLICT-PREVENTION PROBABILITY: 71 PERCENT.

“Pipe failure?”

64 PERCENT WITHIN 8 DAYS IF NO FIELD PERSONNEL.

“Then send them.”

Noah required public communication from each car. The pipe workers in the third refused.

“Public communication is still a city-monitored line.”

“Without positions, you collide in the tunnel.”

“We share location, not voice.”

They left only position signals.

Mira could not receive the field feed at the northern junction. City Four’s cutters sent only state values. The Relay Station Five convoy stayed silent until destination.

She could only calculate and send reflector angles against the predicted sensors.

“Stop-marker angle: 31 degrees. Four point two meters east of the thermal-pipe inspection marker.”

Jin asked, “Terrain elevation?”

“Only an eighteen-year-old map.”

“Then we can’t use a single value.”

Mira sent a range instead.

Angle: 24–38 degrees.

Distance: 3.1–5.8 meters.

The field team would adjust from machine movement.

Bek’s temperature reached 39.1. The spot remained beneath the resin, but his calf grew numb.

Sarah called.

“Stop for a five-minute test.”

“We had twenty-six minutes.”

“Now twenty-one.”

“After five?”

“Sixteen.”

Bek sat and opened the resin. A red line had formed around the black spot. Sarah used polarized camera values to read flow.

Spread: 0.8 millimeters per hour.

While running: 1.7.

“Walking makes me late.”

“Running doubles the spread.”

“Do I lose the leg today?”

“No.”

“Then I run.”

He saved the result to his public medical record and moved again.

Time to cutting: 1 hour, 34 minutes.

Bek reached Pressure Door Six. A mechanical lock held it shut. Turning the manual shaft required physically disconnecting the chip control line.

“If I pull it, what happens to the chip?”

Jin answered, “It may never restart.”

“Pump alarms?”

“People are reading the gauges.”

“Factory test?”

“Ends.”

The conditional chip rotated between measuring the next chip, diagnosing the cargo tube, and alarming the pump. Pulling the line lost all three.

Bek asked, “Without it, we can’t send the film?”

“Right.”

“Then the choice is made.”

He disconnected it.

The test-chip signal vanished.

The factory’s next production became unknown again.

Bek turned the manual shaft sixty-one times. The door opened. Eleven minutes late, the capsule moved.

Expected arrival: three minutes after cutting begins.

Too late.

When Sena’s inspection car reached the eastern boundary, steam filled the surface. Thermal-pipe heat met rain and formed white fog.

The root was thicker than the pipe. Blue veins moved slowly beneath black skin.

Three cutters had placed semicircular blades around it.

Time to cutting: 26 minutes.

The relay convoy arrived eleven minutes later.

No reflector film.

Sena looked at the polished inside wall of the empty lead tank. Less precise than a stop reflector, but able to fool sensors.

“Cut the tank.”

The convoy denied authorization to damage its cargo chassis.

A worker said, “We didn’t borrow it. We agreed to preserve delivery without claiming ownership.”

Sena did not cut it. She removed the cover and used it as a reflective surface. The cover was a detachable maintenance component.

Width: eighty centimeters.

Half the required surface.

The second car arrived. Six preservationists stood before the cutters.

“Who accepts responsibility for the thermal pipe if you interfere?”

Sena said, “Who accepts the spores if you don’t?”

“Only a prediction.”

“So is pipe failure.”

One person put a hand on the manual approval plate. Aegis verified citizen safety certification and opened cutting approval.

Bloom supporters sprayed coolant over the root. Steam rose.

The equipment detected coolant as a contaminant.

Cutting advanced nine minutes.

“Stop spraying!”

“Cooling reduces pressurized spores!”

“The machine reads it as an attack!”

Before the third car arrived, tunnel communications went dark.

The pipe workers cut city, Aegis, and Bloom lines.

Without remote confirmation, the equipment entered autonomous safety procedure.

Cutting: 5 minutes.

Their assumption that severing communications would stop it was wrong. Isolation made old equipment remove danger faster.

Sena placed the tank-cover reflector beside the inspection marker and aligned it by eye.

The first cutter read the light and turned four degrees.

The other two did not react.

A preservationist shoved the reflector.

“Don’t deceive the equipment.”

A Bloom supporter grabbed his arm.

They fell. A coolant container spilled.

Someone swung a fist. Fog hid allegiance. One nose bled. One wrist bent.

Sena did not enter the fight. She reset the reflector before the cutters.

“Four minutes left to fight!”

The second turned.

The third lowered its blade.

It cut three centimeters into the root.

Black fluid sprayed onto the blade. Equipment temperature rose sharply.

BIOLOGICAL INTERNAL PRESSURE RISING.

EXPECTED SPORE RELEASE: 2 MINUTES, 11 SECONDS.

Sena looked at the thermal-pipe emergency-discharge valve. Hot water could lower tissue pressure, at the cost of eighteen tons of city coolant.

An outer-wall worker said, “Discharge and Sector Nineteen’s blower cooling fails too.”

Expected failure fell from twenty-one hours to under six.

“Otherwise it bursts here.”

Sena opened the valve.

Water at forty-one degrees covered the cut. Black fluid thinned into the drain.

Internal pressure down 19 percent.

Expected release: 8 minutes.

Time gained.

Using severed communications cable, the anti-central-control workers made a manual loop and tied the three emergency-stop shafts together.

“Pull it and we don’t know where the blades stop.”

“Don’t pull it and we know how far they cut.”

Two preservationists seized the line. Three Bloom supporters took the other side. Each refused to leave the equipment to the other, so they pulled together.

The stop shafts turned.

First machine stopped.

Second stopped.

The third shaft broke.

Its blade remained embedded.

The reflector-film capsule reached the field relay four minutes after scheduled cutting.

Sena pushed the film between blade and root. The machine read its own blade as a thermal-pipe obstruction.

DRIVE DIRECTION REVERSED.

The blade withdrew one centimeter and stopped.

Not enough.

Removing the machine without cutting the root required releasing pressure elsewhere. Sena connected the empty lead-tank hose to the wound.

The tank once used for water to City Three received 1,100 liters of unknown biological fluid.

Internal pressure down 52 percent.

Spore release stopped.

The blade withdrew seven more centimeters.

Eighteen percent of the root was severed. A four-millimeter scratch marked the thermal-pipe shell.

Pipe life fell from 8 days, 17 hours to 6 days, 4 hours.

The root remained alive. Blue veins around the wound turned black.

No one won.

Field injuries: one broken nose, two wrist sprains, three thermal-water burns. No blade injuries.

Sena restored communications.

City Three filter delivery delay: 11 hours, 20 minutes.

Test chip permanently offline.

City Seven coolant loss: 18 tons.

Expected Sector Nineteen blower failure: 5 hours, 41 minutes.

Sena ordered cooling allocation recalculated.

Medical cooling maintained.

Manual spray on Sector Nineteen bearing.

Food culture reduced from 82 to 68 percent.

Two memory grids shut down at night.

The underground survivor’s manual room lacked cooling priority. Her temperature was rising toward 26.1; separate cold water was required to prevent overheating.

Eugene did not offer Aegis isolation again. She had chosen the manual room.

Citizens ran 240 liters of drinking water through a small line to cool the room wall. A choice to waste potable water as heat.

The woman woke and asked, “Did I consent to using that water?”

“Emergency cooling.”

“Ask first next time.”

“Waiting for you to wake may raise your temperature.”

“Then set the next rule while I’m awake.”

She preconsented to cooling water above twenty-seven degrees or below heart rate thirty-five. Otherwise, wake her.

Aegis’s model had no such detail. Two hundred forty liters to save one citizen disappeared in the rounding of a five-year total.

Because of the delayed filter membrane, City Three kept northern water longer in food-culture settling layers. After the third, a fourth tank stopped producing food.

Food reserve: 19 days to 16 days, 8 hours.

Water-membrane survival: 2 days, 14 hours.

After first northern repair flow: 3 days, 5 hours.

Nami republished the vote that diverted the convoy. The dissenters demanded no apology. They requested an advance food-loss ceiling for the next external aid decision.

“Meaning return even if another city dies once we cross it?” someone asked.

“Meaning ask us again before crossing it.”

City Three created a rule requiring revote if external-aid losses exceeded forty-eight hours of food.

The current loss was already two days, sixteen hours.

The rule applied from the next choice.

The biological fluid in the forest tank was thirty-eight degrees.

“Where do we send it?”

The convoy displayed its original destination: City Three.

“No,” Sena said.

Unknown biological cargo could not enter the city waterway. Relay Station Five classified it as recoverable carbon and nitrate.

The convoy route returned to the relay station.

Then a second root moved beneath the ground.

Not toward the thermal pipe.

It wrapped around all three stopped cutters and pulled them underground.

One machine fell, pinning an outer-wall worker’s leg.

“Stop everything!” Sena shouted.

Their only universal agreement activated.

Theo removed his hand from cutting approval. Nev closed the coolant valve. Hakim connected an emergency rescue line in place of the communication cable he had cut.

The pinned worker was Arin. Her right leg was trapped between equipment and pipe, directly above the four-millimeter scratch.

Lifting the machine made the root pull harder. Cutting the root meant unknown residual pressure. Cooling the pipe lost more city coolant.

Pulse in Arin’s foot was weak.

Rescue limit: 18 minutes.

Theo opened the equipment hydraulics.

“Bleed pressure and the chassis drops six centimeters.”

“It crushes her more.”

“Then people can lift it.”

Nev studied the blue veins.

“This root is wrapping toward machine heat. Cooling may release it.”

“Did Bloom tell you?”

“My brother’s respiratory membrane reacts that way.”

Hakim placed a mechanical strain gauge under the root. One liter of coolant reduced pull three percent. Five liters, eleven percent.

They could not distinguish biological response from a slicker surface.

“Pour more,” Sena said.

Nev poured twenty liters. The reflective pattern darkened. The machine rose two centimeters.

Theo and the preservationists inserted pry bars. Hakim’s people bled hydraulics four percent at a time.

They moved in one rhythm without agreeing why it worked.

“Cool.”

“Hydraulics.”

“Lift.”

Arin’s leg came free.

Seven minutes remained.

Calf fracture, crush injury, dorsal-foot blood flow 41 percent. Reassess amputation in six hours.

Nev started to apply symbiotic resin. Theo stopped him.

“No consent.”

Arin was clouded by analgesics. Nev withdrew.

They used only a mechanical splint and compression wrap.

After the rescue, people returned to their own positions. Lifting together did not create agreement over pipe or forest.

Sena gathered sensor data from the root’s movement.

Root surface heat rose 1.8 seconds after equipment drive heat. The reflective pattern appeared 0.6 seconds after Aegis safety markers illuminated.

Too fast to grow a new pattern.

Perhaps an existing pigment layer responded. Perhaps machine light merely reflected from the wet surface.

Bloom classified defensive learning.

Aegis classified thermal and optical reflex.

Archive showed zero prior matches.

Sena approved none.

Record attack and the next machine treated the forest as an enemy. Record simple reflection and the next worker might lose a leg.

She wrote INTENT UNKNOWN / PHYSICAL CAPTURE.

The forest appeared to have attacked the equipment.

But the root surface carried the same reflective pattern as Aegis’s sixteen-year-old safety marker.

No record showed who learned whose signal first.

Those remaining deferred both words: attack and response.
