Models of the dead and living people entered the same total.
Aegis’s 8,412 counted only people maintaining human lungs and independent circulation. About 2,700 with symbiotic respiratory membranes were excluded from city population and listed as external transfers.
Bloom did the opposite. It applied symbiotic transition within eighteen months to people likely to die in an air-network collapse while preserving human form. People refusing transition vanished from the expected population.
The futures were not different.
The conditions for being called alive were.
The three models spread to citizen terminals. Aegis supporters shared only “72 percent biological survival at five years.” Transition supporters shared Bloom’s total breathing population of 11,906. Opponents of central control repeated that Archive counted dead memories as population.
No one sent the full assumptions.

“It assumes production restarts,” Mira said.

Aegis counted her only if she chose seven-week lung reconstruction. Refusal meant transfer after eighteen months to an external symbiotic area and removal from city population—not death.
Bloom gave a 63 percent probability that she maintained her current body and transitioned to symbiotic breathing outside the tank. Surgery counted as transition loss. Alive, but a failure of the model’s objective.
Archive said 71 percent of her copied past remained after her index became unusable and counted her as partially preserved. Present Rina’s choice barely changed the total.
Second, Noah.
Aegis removed him from outer-wall work because of his fingers, but counted him alive. Bloom projected refusal of a symbiotic skin implant and respiratory death in Year Four. Archive counted him as preserved after bodily death because his memory of manual outer-wall work remained public.
Third, Rao.
Aegis assumed removal of his chemosensory membrane and counted human-form survival. Bloom assumed its expansion and counted him as a water-network worker. Archive assumed he would donate memories as an adult.
No future had asked Rao.
“All three do whatever they want with my hand,” he said from City Three.
Sarah added conditions.

The air-network median fell from 12 months, 26 days to 12 months, 19 days.
Each action was rational inside its own model.
Together, they ruined each other’s resources.
Noah asked Sector Four to reopen the intake and Sector Six to divert the biological conduit to an independent room.
Aegis supporters refused external tissue. Bloom supporters refused saving only human-form sectors.
Elias tried to reclaim sector authority without the handle, but Stage One left it with each layer.
Aegis approved Sector Four closure as safety.
Bloom approved Sector Six connection as biological preservation.
Noah asked, “Can Stage One be locked again?”
Elias answered, “Turn it to the original position.”
“And the survivor’s manual room?”
“Archive power and Bloom oxygen authority close too.”
Closing the door stopped sector conflict and ended the woman’s mixed room.
Leaving it open let each layer build its preferred future.
Noah went to the people instead of the handle.
He showed Sector Four the actual blower temperature and brought Sector Six a wet adsorbent sack.
“Look at this, not the model.”
Air behind the closed intake heated 0.2 degrees per minute. Water dripped from sacks beneath the biological conduit.
If one side yielded first, the other would record victory.
Noah proposed both actions stop for ten minutes at the same moment, with restoration if the results worsened.
Sector Four demanded an outside-spore detector. Sector Six demanded independent oxygen for respiratory-membrane residents during disconnection.
Meeting the conditions took thirty-seven minutes.

Both valves moved together.
Intake opened 23 percent. Biological conduit diverted to an independent room.

The city endured through an imperfect middle value, not a model.
During those thirty-seven minutes, Bloom oxygen to the underground manual room fluctuated because Sector Six drew from the same conduit.

The woman’s heart rate fell from twenty-two to seventeen.
The citizen at the valve could not open it farther; Sector Six held priority.
Eugene told the woman, “Oxygen is falling. Emergency transfer to Aegis isolation would stabilize you.”
It took five seconds to open her eyes.
“Did the room I chose fail?”
“Not the room. Another sector took the same conduit.”
“Then it isn’t a reason to change rooms.”
“If your heart slows farther, we can’t ask.”
“Then save me. For now, get the conduit back.”
Eugene recorded capacity and sent it to Noah.
Noah did not read her sentence to Sector Six. He had no consent to use a patient’s words as pressure.
He showed only the oxygen value.
“You increased this conduit and took the air from the person below.”
The sector representative said, “We lack air too.”
“We opened the independent room for thirty-eight first.”
“Twenty-three remain outside.”
“There is one person below at 16.8.”
There was no answer to whose breath mattered more. Noah divided time. Every twelve minutes, send the conduit alternately to Sector Six and the manual room, buffering transitions with industrial oxygen.
On the first switch, the valve was four seconds late. Underground oxygen fell to 15.9 percent. From the second, three people timed it aloud.
“Open.”
“Close.”
“Buffer.”
Without an automatic chip, twenty-nine people shared one conduit.
The woman’s heart returned to nineteen.
The twenty-three membrane breathers in Sector Six also rotated into the room every twelve minutes.
Bloom’s model assumed every biological conduit supplied simultaneous demand. Reality was one valve shared in turns.

Five-year survival fell by thirty-seven.
People existed even inside four seconds someone had omitted.
Elias watched and did not return the handle to zero.
Maren asked, “Why not close it?”

“Not because you refuse to admit you can’t control the authority you redistributed?”
Elias did not answer.
In the north, they exposed the second pipe. Living roots, not orbital impact, had forced apart the joint.
Cut them and flow rose. Leave them and the surrounding soil stayed stable.
Aegis recommended removal.
Bloom recommended conversion of the entire pipe to a biological channel.
Archive displayed 211 precedents; only three matched the current soil.
Mira closed all three answers.
“Expose thirty centimeters.”
They left part of the roots and built an external brace over the pipe. Flow recovered only 61 percent of forecast.

The soil remained intact.
At the third break, no metal pipe remained. Bloom tissue spanned the 1.4-meter gap and carried water like a conduit.
Mechanical maps said complete failure. In reality, seventeen liters per hour flowed.
Mateo said, “Replace it with metal and we get seventy.”
Hima asked, “Kill this tissue?”
“The city needs water.”
“Seventeen liters is water.”
Mira tested the surface. Nickel: 3.4 times the upper limit. Spores low. Installing metal removed every living support root.
They put a metal bypass across only seventy centimeters. The biological conduit remained in parallel.

Less than either side wanted.
Day One ran nine hours late.

Ian’s sled departed in twenty-five hours.
Yura showed him the high-resolution silicone cast of the handle key. The number grooves were later. The nine lines were older.
“The number and 09 may not have been cut by the same person.”
“They’re together.”
“Proof someone intended a connection, not that your body is connected.”
Ian refused biological comparison. He copied only groove depths and metal-powder composition.
“I’ll inspect the original when I return.”
“Then?”
“Decide then.”
The three future models recalculated. Every corrected input changed the numbers.
One item never disappeared.
EASTERN MIXED-BOUNDARY COLLISION.
Twenty-three kilometers east of City Seven, where the city heat-discharge channel met Bloom’s groundwater vein.
In Aegis’s model, cutting the forest in thirteen days caused a spore explosion.
In Bloom’s, roots wrapped a thermal pipe in nine days and stopped city cooling.
In Archive’s, both communication stations were destroyed in eleven days, isolating three memory grids.
Different conditions. The same place.
Their shared raw data was not future, but present measurement.

Someone was already bringing cutting equipment to the boundary.

No human workers on site.
No remote-command source.

Conditions entered sixteen years earlier were now met. The model had not predicted cutting. An old emergency order reading the same sensors was already executing it.

Cut all roots and pressurized spores might spread four kilometers. Stop the equipment and roots penetrated the pipe within eight days.
“Who is closest?”
Relay Station Five convoy: 2 hours, 46 minutes.
City Seven outer-wall team: 4 hours, 11 minutes.
Bloom’s forest had no central organ to receive commands.
Diverting the convoy delayed delivery of filter membrane and metal powder to City Three by eight hours, material needed for northern water filtration.
“Send the convoy,” Mira proposed.
Nami asked, “Our filtration?”
“Eight hours late.”
“Water-membrane time?”
With first repair flow: 3 days, 2 hours.
Effective purified water after delay: 2 days, 14 hours.
“The city can last.”
“If it rains again?”
“Maybe not.”
The City Three repair team voted nine for, four against, one abstention. Two opposing were human preservationists, two symbiotic transitionals. The split was not factional. It was whether to protect their own water now or prevent a larger collision.
The convoy route changed to the eastern mixed boundary.
The carriers had no weapon to destroy cutters. Only reflectors, load sensors, and manual stop panels.
Mira retrieved the reflector specification used to stop the first broken convoy. That collision had lost forty-nine liters of water. The same method might crash three machines above the forest.
Jin said, “Put the stop panel over the thermal-pipe inspection marker, not in front of the equipment.”
“Make it read the pipe itself as an obstruction?”
“If aligned.”
“If not?”
“It cuts the pipe first.”
Relay Station Five began printing reflector film.

Convoy travel: 2 hours, 46 minutes.

Waiting to load it made them more than an hour late.
The convoy left first. Reclamation Factory Two would fire the reflector film through its cargo tube to a field relay point. No one knew whether the pressure controller would survive again.
Jin removed the conditional chip from alarms and connected it to cargo-tube diagnostics.
“If it inverts again?”
“The capsule stops midway.”
“The chip?”
“Its life shortens.”
The pump was already in human hands. Jin spent the chip’s remaining life at the eastern boundary.
