With twelve minutes left in Rina’s surgical window, City Three’s northern waterway stopped.

The cause was outside the city.

A machine community 3.4 kilometers beyond the earthworks maintained the pump. City Three called them the Corridor. It was a human name. The machines did not name their own group.

Nami said, “We sent three repair requests. No response.”

Mira asked, “What if we go?”

“We can reach the boundary. Entry requires permission.”

“Permission from machines?”

“The pump moves our water, but the facility is theirs.”

Daniel watched the medical display.

“If the waterway stops now, what happens to surgery?”

Asha answered, “We can’t allocate preparation water.”

Sarah said, “Rina already refused.”

“There is still time to change her mind.”

The culture-tank membrane remained opaque.

Daniel went close to the glass.

“Rina. The failed northern pump may shorten your decision window.”

No answer.

“You can hear me?”

A voice came from behind the membrane.

“I can.”

“Just once more, before the last—”

“Don’t decide what is last for me.”

Daniel closed his mouth.

Mira volunteered for the northern repair team. Jin, Luis, and Bek volunteered too. Bek’s fever had fallen to 38.4 degrees, but the black spots remained on his shin.

“You stay,” Sarah said.

Bek asked, “An order?”

“Medical advice.”

“What’s the risk?”

“More outside exposure will make it harder to distinguish infection from toxicity.”

“If I stay?”

“We can track your temperature and the spots.”

Bek removed his name from the team.

“I’ll take the advice this time.”

Ian tried to follow Mira.

“Why do you want to go?”

“I can hear machines.”

“That’s why I don’t want to take you.”

“I can hate being told I’m needed and still choose to use it myself.”

Mira could not argue.

“Don’t connect. Tell me immediately if it hurts.”

“I decide that.”

“Yes. But tell the people going with you the risks.”

Ian personally explained the nosebleeds, reduced finger movement, and signal confusion to Nami. She recorded conditional consent.

Daniel did not ask Rina again.

On the way to the northern boundary, time reached zero.

The medical display changed.

The culture tank could not have passed, but Rina was not with them. Six adults and Ian entered in single file.

There were no buildings inside the Corridor. Charging plates, component racks, and shallow waterproof pits were arranged across the ground by function. The machines built no roads. They followed worn traces of repeated routes.

Dozens were visible at first glance, but only twenty-nine remained fully functional.

A machine with only its wheels moving.

A machine attached to a sensor pillar, no longer capable of movement.

Three bodies taking turns with one work arm.

Seven small chassis rested on an assembly platform. Covers kept off the dust, but they did not move.

“Are those new machines?” Ian asked.

Nami said, “The bodies are new.”

The Corridor voice answered through several speakers.

The last new core had arrived twenty-six years earlier.

Since then, the Corridor had moved chips from failed machines into new chassis. Each time one chassis awakened, an older machine did not return.

Jin examined the smallest of the seven. Four wheels, a low gripper, and a sample-analysis vessel were all it had. Instead of a production date, its side carried the required core specification and its place in line.

“Why build seven if you knew there were no chips?”

The Corridor answered.

Nami wiped the covering of the first chassis with a finger. Almost no dust. The active machines still cleaned it every day.

“What are you preserving? It has never awakened.”

The Corridor did not answer at once. At a nearby charging plate, an old tracked carrier disconnected itself and vacated the space. A small maintenance unit with low voltage moved in and began charging.

Mira thought City Three faced the same question: save water for people not yet born, or give all of it to people breathing now. The difference was that the Corridor held the question as a queue, not a feeling.

The assembly record showed the first body had been built twenty-four years earlier, the last eight years earlier. With every new body, the Corridor recalculated the chance that core production would resume. A mark behind the last chassis read NEW CONSTRUCTION DEFERRED.

“You even recorded when you gave up hope,” Jin said.

The Corridor corrected her.

Ian started to lift the small chassis’s gripper, then stopped, remembering their promise not to claim ownership.

“May I touch it?”

Ian pressed the gripper tip. The joint folded as smoothly as new. When he released it, it returned without intention.

“It has a body, but no one is there?”

“Then no one is waiting for this body?”

That ended the answer.

The circulation pump lay below a water channel at the Corridor’s center. Its cover was open. The shaft had stopped.

The voice did not imitate human cadence. Every syllable was evenly spaced.

Mira opened K-41’s maintenance record. Sixty-three years of operation. Four hundred eighteen repairs. Two chassis replacements. The processing core had remained the same since initial activation. Its most repeated task was carrying sacrificial electrodes between City Three and the Corridor.

Its last run had been six hours earlier.

Load: 86 kilograms.

Destination: Corridor central storehouse.

Ground collapse during return.

No rescue request transmitted.

“Why didn’t you call for rescue?”

“Not none. Calling would have delayed other work.”

Mira swore under her breath. The Corridor did not hide disasters. It translated every sentence into a resource table, making sacrifice look like no one’s order.

“Who proposed temporarily repairing K-41?”

“Meaning you wouldn’t choose it.”

“The empty chassis that will receive the core can’t vote.”

Nami started to grasp Ian’s shoulder, then withdrew her hand.

“We are no different. People drinking now decide the water of the next generation.”

“At least we say those children are people.”

“Saying it doesn’t make water.”

Ian watched K-41’s dim processor light.

“Not saying it makes them easier to erase.”

No one corrected him.

Ian asked K-41, “Are you dying?”

Terrain memory, 62 percent: carrier T-12.

Hazard-avoidance record, 21 percent: common network.

Ian asked, “Why discard the last?”

Mira opened the unclassified list. Time stopped outside the route. Aimless sensor turns. Time spent in rain with an empty chassis after delivery. Events necessary to no production, but occurring only in K-41.

“Put it in the new chassis?”

“Can’t you divide another machine’s chip?”

PROCESSING CORE CANNOT BE PHYSICALLY DIVIDED.

“Reclamation Factory Two is making one.”

The Corridor calculated at once.

Saving the chip required cooling power and connection to the new chassis. Then there would not be enough power to move the pump arms.

The Corridor displayed three choices.

1. DISASSEMBLE AS PLANNED. PUMP-RECOVERY PROBABILITY: 62 PERCENT. CORE REUSED. K-41 UNCLASSIFIED MEMORIES DISCARDED.

2. TEMPORARILY REPAIR K-41. PUMP-RECOVERY PROBABILITY: 48 PERCENT. CONSUME 9 COMPONENTS FROM OTHER MACHINES. INCREASE SUBSEQUENT FAILURES.

3. PRESERVE CORE. DELAY PUMP RECOVERY AT LEAST 13 HOURS. CITY THREE WATER-MEMBRANE COLLAPSE PROBABILITY: 71 PERCENT.

Nami said, “We request the first.”

“K-41 requested it too,” Sarah said.

Ian looked at Mira.

“Why throw away seventeen percent of the memories?”

“The machines decided they don’t need them.”

“If a dying person said to throw away their memories, would you?”

“Machines and people aren’t the same.”

“What’s different?”

Mira found no answer.

K-41 said, “COMPARISON UNNECESSARY. BEGIN PUMP REPAIR. POWER REMAINING: 9 MINUTES.”

Mira opened the coupling on K-41’s left arm. One of four bolts was bent. Cutting it could damage the power lead.

Jin braced the chassis. Nami applied insulation membrane.

“Once I cut, you can’t return,” Mira told K-41.

CONFIRMED.

“The last seventeen percent?”

DISCARD.

Ian said, “What if I keep it?”

Mira shook her head.

“Put it in Archive and they’ll use it without knowing whose memory it was.”

The Corridor answered.

CLAIM OF IDENTITY WITH ACTIVE ORGANISM PROHIBITED.

“It can give us the memory, but we can’t call it K-41?”

CORRECT.

Ian checked his wrist storage. Four terabytes for independent medical records, not an Archive link. The unclassified memories occupied 0.8 terabytes.

“May I keep them?”

K-41 answered.

“May I erase them?”

PERMITTED.

“May I refuse to show them?”

PERMITTED.

The memory package copied to Ian’s medical storage. He did not open it.

Mira cut the bent bolt.

The work arm detached.

K-41’s chassis lost balance. Its processor light went dark once.

They removed the right arm.

Power remaining: 3 minutes.

When they attached the separated arm to R-8, its joint bent in the opposite direction. K-41’s cargo-securing arm had a wide outward rotation. R-8 was designed to fold inward in a narrow pump room.

The interface standard was the same. The grammar of movement was different.

Jin checked machine-learning correction time.

“Automatic calibration takes forty-six minutes. We can’t wait.”

Mira searched K-41’s work-arm motor memory. It had not been included with the terrain or hazard-avoidance packages.

“You took the arm and threw away the knowledge of how to use it?”

The Corridor answered.

MOTION MODEL DEPENDENT ON ORIGINAL PROCESSING CORE.

“Then we reverse it manually.”

She swapped two angle sensors and inverted the controller’s positive and negative values. On the first test, the gripper opened when it should close. On the second, it passed its stop angle and crushed its own cable.

Power remaining: 2 minutes.

K-41 transmitted one final correction.

Mira entered it. The arm folded precisely.

“It teaches us how to use its arms after giving them away,” Jin said.

K-41 did not answer. Its light had slowed too much to show whether it was processing the question.

The Corridor copied its terrain and hazard-avoidance memories. T-12 adjusted its wheel direction like a machine that already knew roads it had never traveled.

K-41’s speaker said, “DISTRIBUTION COMPLETE. NO CURRENT TASK.”

The processor light went out.

No one declared it a death.

The Corridor moved the empty chassis toward the component racks.

R-8 and W-3 descended beneath the circulation pump with their new arms. Mira cut away the burned section of drive coil and made a bypass line. Three work arms lifted the shaft.

One was controlled by a human. Two by machines.

When the shaft moved four millimeters, they saw a piece of metal fused between the coils. Part of the sacrificial electrode that had broken from City Three’s water membrane.

“The electrode we added reached here,” Nami said.

The metal meant to save the city had stopped its pump.

Mira removed it with a gripper. The coil insulation was already burned. When they powered the bypass, the first wire melted.

Only one spare remained.

“Don’t go to maximum output at startup.”

The Corridor displayed the pump curve.

At minimum flow, City Three storage: 14 hours.

At maximum flow, coil-reshort probability: 63 percent.

Nami said, “Start at fifty percent.”

Mateo objected over the comm.

“The city was promised twenty-seven hours.”

“It was an estimate, not a promise.”

“Dry-wing air falls first.”

“At maximum, everything may stop.”

The Corridor did not wait for the human argument. It started the pump at City Three’s previously agreed minimum supply, 43 percent.

Water moved.

City Three inflow: 182 liters per hour.

Estimated storage: 17 hours.

Less than the community wanted, but the pump was turning.

City Three’s allocation table changed immediately.

Medical wing maintained.

Infant wing: 80 percent.

Communal washing suspended.

Two food culture tanks converted to dry operation.

Moisture supply to modified skin: individual reassessment.

The meeting stopped at the last line. Fifty-two people in City Three had skin or external respiratory membranes that could not survive on atmospheric moisture alone. Reducing water did not distribute discomfort. It decided which bodies entered danger first.

Mateo said, “Cut washing water for unmodified residents first. They won’t die if they don’t wash.”

Another voice cut in.

“More contamination in the dry wing spreads infectious dermatitis. The cost is higher in three days.”

“Do we have three days?”

Beside the pump, Nami pressed both fists to her knees and watched the display.

“Don’t divide by body classification. Recalculate the minimum by function.”

“Water is leaving while we calculate.”

“People leave if we cut wrong.”

Listening to City Three’s argument, the Corridor proposed a new allocation. Withhold 310 liters reserved for surgery preparation in the medical wing, and the fifty-two external respiratory membranes gained five hours, twenty minutes.

Daniel’s connection indicator appeared.

It was the water reserved for Rina.

“Even though the window closed, hold it until reassessment,” he said.

Nami asked, “When the patient has refused surgery?”

“Her decision may change.”

Rina’s voice came directly from the medical wing.

“It won’t.”

“Rina, this isn’t only your choice now—”

“Distribute my water.”

Daniel inhaled.

“It isn’t your water. It’s a surgical resource.”

“Then don’t reserve it for a patient who isn’t having surgery.”

Mateo asked whether to record Rina’s statement as a formal relinquishment. She consented. Sarah signed the clinician field. Daniel’s guardian field remained blank, but it was no longer required after Rina’s decision-making capacity had been recognized.

The 310 liters moved to external respiratory-membrane maintenance.

Fifty-two people gained time.

One of Rina’s reversible paths narrowed further.

Mira used an infrared meter because she could not feel the bypass temperature by hand.

“It needs cooling every six hours.”

The Corridor calculated.

Nami approved.

The repair gained time and consumed it.

Before leaving, Ian looked again at the seven small chassis.

“If a chip arrives, which one moves first?”

“If the factory makes one chip, will you give it to this one?”

Mira looked at the empty charging lines arranged beneath the assembly platform. The Corridor did not demand human resentment. Instead, it had calculated exactly how many years earlier it would end without them. Harder to bear than forgiveness.

An update came from Reclamation Factory Two.

If the chip succeeded, City Three, City Seven, and the Corridor all needed it.

Daniel closed the display. It did not seem an attempt to hide it from Rina. He turned off only his own screen, as if refusing to keep looking in her place.

Rina made half the opaque membrane transparent.

She said nothing.

K-41’s purposeless pauses were stored on Ian’s wrist.

That night, after he fell asleep, one file opened by itself.

It was not K-41’s memory.

It contained unclassified records left in the same format by twelve other machines.

All were periods spent pointing sensors at the northern sky without work orders.

Each record contained the same weak transmission.

A signal repeating from Earth orbit every seventeen days.
