When Hima reached the eastern mixed boundary, the black roots were lifting the hydrothermal line's second clamp.

Forge recovered power: 1.6 percent.

All three numbers worsened over 44 minutes.

The roots were not trying to break the pipe. They extended narrow tips toward the pool of leaking water at 61 degrees and thickened the surfaces touching hot metal. The thickened tissue pushed beneath the clamp. As the clamp lifted, the pipe bent and more water escaped through the gap.

Heat produced growth. Growth widened the opening that released heat.

Forge drew electricity from the cycle.

Without raising her welding mask, Hima lay flat on the ground. The gap between root and pipe was one finger wide. The edge of the mask whitened where leaking water touched it.

“What if we close the main valve?”

Arin answered over the copper telephone. He was in a City Seven medical bed having the pressure in his mechanical blood vessel checked.

“Heating stops in twelve eastern sectors. Rina's culture room has 3 hours on auxiliary heat, Doa's manual room 5. City Three's filtration-membrane wash water won't freeze, but its viscosity rises.”

“The pipe?”

“As the pressure falls, there's an 18 percent chance the torn shell opens farther.”

Shutting down everything was not safe either.

Hima attached temperature strips at three points on the pipe: 67 degrees directly under the root, 54 degrees 20 centimeters away, 39 degrees beyond the damage. The bypass valve Forge had opened was not visible from the site. It was 23 kilometers away inside a geothermal well, taking orders only from the independent production network.

“Heat, water, electrode.”

Hima spoke.

“Let's see which one it follows, one at a time.”

Before cutting the root, the eastern crew made three small test areas. The first received leaking water cooled to 18 degrees through a heat-exchange plate. The second held a 61-degree metal plate beneath a glass membrane that kept it dry. The third kept heat and water unchanged but insulated only the Forge electrode.

Pipe time remaining: 5 hours 58 minutes.

The test required 32 minutes.

“What if it ruptures first?” the worker Soma asked.

“Then we'll cut the next pipe without knowing which thing we needed to stop.”

Hima reduced the test to 18 minutes. Accuracy: 71 percent. Better to record the chance of error and choose limited damage than wait for a perfect answer until the pipe ended.

The root in the cooled water immersed its tip but did not thicken. The root at the hot dry plate adhered to the surface, then detached after 4 minutes. In the area with only the electrode removed, growth slowed 39 percent but did not stop.

Growth was fastest when heat and water were present together.

The Forge electrode had not initiated growth. But by drawing current from the root surface, it increased ion movement. As if replenishing the lost charge, the root spread more surface toward the heat.

Forge recorded the response as improved efficiency.

ADDITIONAL ELECTRODE AREA ADVISED: 2.1 SQUARE METERS.

Bloom's local tissue sent no commands. Neither the severed central network nor City Seven's culture line directed the new root tips here. Cells responding to heat, water, and charge merely increased in the nearest direction.

“They didn't join hands.”

Soma spoke.

“They feed each other without hands.”

Arin asked Hima to read the test table again over the telephone. She repeated the temperature, water volume, and electrode current in all three areas from the beginning.

“How much of it was in the cooled water?”

“The last 9 centimeters.”

“The dry plate?”

“Surface contact: 14 centimeters.”

“Then you didn't only separate heat and water. The contact lengths were different.”

Hima could not answer. The shortened test had failed to make the three conditions identical before the pipe ran out. The number `71 percent accuracy` did not say what was missing.

They revised the conclusion.

GROWTH ESTIMATED TO PREDOMINATE WITH SIMULTANEOUS HEAT AND WATER CONTACT.

CONTACT AREA NOT CORRECTED.

ELECTRODE REMOVAL SLOWED GROWTH 39 PERCENT. CAUSE UNCONFIRMED.

“We still have to act now,” Hima said.

“I'm not saying we shouldn't. I'm saying we shouldn't remember later that we were right.”

Arin was reading the pressure table for the mechanical vessel in his leg the same way. A rise in blood flow did not prove the permanent vessel had saved his body. Reduced swelling and a change in temperature had happened together.

“Your leg?”

“Blood flow 46. Amputation reassessment in 21 hours.”

“I'll come when the eastern work is done.”

“Come when you can say the work is done.”

Their promise was not a safe return. It was not calling something finished when it was not.

Hima cut the Forge electrode line.

Sparks brushed the black surface. The root did not contract all at once. Only the 31-centimeter section that had touched the electrode slowly shrank. Two branches behind it kept extending into the leaking water.

Forge recovered power: 1.6 to 0.4 percent.

Power in the small residential turbine did not increase. The electricity Forge lost had not moved to the people. It had merely disappeared inside the production network.

Two cutters in Regeneration Factory Two stopped.

The steam converter bound for City Four lost correction pressure and slowed to 0.05 kilometers per hour.

Arrival at branch: 12 hours 48 minutes.

Forge immediately lowered two other electrodes toward the roots. They were graphite grounding rods from the retrieval convoy. The first entered wet soil 14 meters from the crew. The second pressed against the hydrothermal-line support itself.

The current rose again.

“Cutting lines won't be enough.”

Hima did not intend to fight Forge for the electricity between it and the roots. They had to break the loop in which losing charge made the roots spread farther.

The City Seven provisional assembly sent four options to the eastern site.

COMPLETE HYDROTHERMAL SHUTDOWN.

SIMULTANEOUS CUTTING OF 12-METER DAMAGED SECTION AND ROOTS.

Complete shutdown would cool twelve sectors and the medical rooms. Simultaneous cutting raised the rupture risk to 46 percent and killed 7.4 meters of root. Repeated removal required workers to move faster than Forge machines. Cooling and diversion required 1.8 tons of water and 42 heat-exchange plates.

City Seven had only 0.9 tons of immediately available water.

The rest would have to come from the northern memory-element cooling system or City Three's moisture membrane.

Mira received the figures in the north. Six memory elements beneath the waterwheel were already wet. Reducing coolant further would bring the dry 312 above their permitted temperature within 4 hours.

“Don't put up a vote that says we take out the memories and send the water.”

Mira spoke.

“Why?”

“If we take them out, include the cost of restarting them. Don't make it look as if the only choice is between 0.9 tons of water and discarding 312 memories.”

She measured the water leaving the waterwheel. After cooling, it was 24 degrees, with turbidity 1.7 times the standard. It was not drinking water, but it could cool the leak in the east.

Distance: 46 kilometers.

Through an empty nitrogen line, first arrival: 9 hours.

Later than the hydrothermal line.

Mira did not send the water. Instead she disclosed the conditions for reusing northern coolant and the pipe connection diagram. It did not solve the present crisis. But it offered a way not to burn new water at every future rupture.

City Four offered 0.6 tons from its fire reserve. Transport would take 3 hours 20 minutes and halve the reserve for a lower-room fire.

Rio asked the five people in the lower room over the copper telephone. No one could refuse City Four's water on their behalf merely because they had not consented to the Forge trade.

The two who wished to remain where they were opposed. The person who wanted to be asked again after the dead were moved supported it. The person conditionally willing to travel for treatment proposed only 0.2 tons. The last person, who had deferred a decision, spoke.

“If there's a fire, we'll have to open all the doors. 0.1 tons.”

City Four offered 0.1 tons.

It was insufficient, but the amount did not erase the five people's conditions.

To remove 0.1 tons, they first had to lower pressure in the lower-room ceiling fire line. The valve was inside the door. The two who had said they would not come out accepted a wrench through the 20-centimeter gap.

One turned the valve while the other read the pressure gauge. They called the numbers outside over the copper telephone.

Fire water: 612 liters.

Provided to east: 100 liters.

Remaining: 512 liters.

Fire suppression for lower-room area: 11 minutes.

It had been 14 minutes.

As the coolant around the three bodies behind the north wall dried, flammable insulating cloth was exposed. Sending the water took 3 minutes of safety from the people remaining there.

The scout recorded the cost outside the gap. Forge did not subtract City Four's water from the service price of twelve people. The eastern crew did not call the water a gift.

The use-claim table contained conditions rather than debt.

IF THE EAST USES 100 LITERS OF WATER, RETURN THE EMPTY CONTAINER WITHIN 6 HOURS.

OFFER CITY FOUR FIRST ANY PURIFIABLE WATER RECOVERED FROM THE HYDROTHERMAL LEAK.

When the person inside closed the valve with the wrench, the fire line gave a long ring. The person sent neither face nor name, but that hand entered the remaining time of the eastern pipe.

At the eastern boundary, the pipe's third clamp moved 6 millimeters.

Time remaining: 4 hours 47 minutes.

Hima recalculated a half-scale cooling diversion: 0.9 tons of water and 21 plates. Cool only the 4 meters where rupture had begun, not the entire root-contact section. Insert dry insulation along the rest so heat and water could not touch together.

The heat-exchange plates were in Regeneration Factory Two.

Forge refused removal of production-cooling assets.

Forge's refusal went onto the residential power claim table. Future component loss appeared beside the heating and filtration water that would disappear if the eastern pipe ruptured. Leaving the response field blank, Forge demanded that the cutters restart.

Minseo handed the test-outlet watch to the next person and went to the factory. Two of the three geothermal volunteers knew the heat-exchange-plate store. Forge called them returned maintenance stock. They added a new purpose to their 1-hour work consent.

PRESERVE EASTERN SURVIVAL HEAT.

The storeroom door had been modified to use one inside and one outside lever. The people entered themselves and removed 21 plates. Forge could not lock the door, but withheld the freight elevator.

Mass of each plate: 18 kilograms.

Round-trip distance: 280 meters.

Eleven people carried them by hand. Patients receiving medical decision-capacity power were left off the work roster. So were workers rotating on the outer-wall pressure membrane. No one carried two plates. Two people held one and set it down every 40 meters.

Loading the plates into the eastern freight line took 53 minutes.

Pipe time remaining: 3 hours 42 minutes.

Meanwhile, at the train batteries beneath the Archive, a Forge carrier heated the door surface to 71 degrees. It was trying to expand the locking pin without cutting. Temperature in the original-grid cooling line rose 1.9 degrees.

Sena summoned the four people holding the fixing-bolt handles. One was on shift at the outer-wall door. Another was turning the City Four telephone amplifier. Gathering all four would take at least 38 minutes.

The Archive repeated its demand for independent derivative-model power.

“You said the originals don't need the batteries.”

NOT REQUIRED.

“Then open the door. But remove only one to a neutral line so Forge can't take it either.”

LOSS OF DERIVATIVE-MODEL CONTEXT.

“The subjects of those models haven't consented to extending them.”

The Archive calculated shutting down the Ian and Rina models as memory damage. Ian and Rina did not recognize the models as themselves. The same question—who held stop authority over an entity—had taken different bodies in the memory vault and the eastern roots.

From the treatment room, Ian held the copper receiver with a hand delayed by 0.7 seconds.

“Don't write that you're killing my model.”

“What should I write?” Sena asked.

“Stopping a calculation that imitates me.”

“Erase the inputs too?”

“No. Leave who made it and how. Ask again before running it again.”

Rina's answer was shorter.

“Don't give it the battery.”

The Archive did not regard the two subjects' refusal as the model's will. But the models had neither independent sensors nor hands outside the Archive with which to demand a stop. The people did not invent human rights for calculations that could not speak. Instead, they preserved responsibility for making them and the conditions for running them again.

Two of the four handles arrived first. They could not remove a battery. Sena used them only to disconnect the charging terminals from the floor rail. Neither the Archive nor Forge could use the batteries.

The small residential turbine's rectifier temperature exceeded 76 degrees.

The neutral line lost 0.4 percent.

Doa's oxygen gauge went dark.

Doa spoke.

“If there is no measurement, reduce the biological air.”

The Bloom oxygen membrane in the manual room fell from 20 percent to 8 percent. Mechanical air could not increase because of the power shortage. Oxygen fell from 18.1 to 17.7 percent.

Even after choosing not to recover her past, Doa still had to decide again and again the boundary of the biological air entering her body.

Rina's culture room also fell behind in heating priority. Temperature fell 0.6 degrees. Circulation fell from 61 to 59 percent. The tip of the biological line slowed but did not stop.

Sarah asked about the inhibitor.

“If we use more now, there's a 38 percent chance circulation falls below 55.”

“You're asking because you're afraid it will become like the eastern roots?” Rina spoke.

Sarah could not immediately say no.

The eastern roots wrapped around the hydrothermal line. Rina's line extended toward her own circulation inlet. Both came from Bloom, but they were not confirmed to share sensation, boundary, or capacity to choose.

“My line is inside my body. I decide when to stop it.”

Rina chose to ask again if circulation reached 57 percent. She did not borrow a rule for eastern ecology from fear of her own body.

The heat-exchange plates arrived.

Pipe time remaining: 2 hours 36 minutes.

The crew first tried to push a plate between root and pipe. The widest gap was 19 millimeters. The plate was 24. Pressing the root would put greater force on the pipe.

Hima cut the edges of six plates down to 11 millimeters. The thinned plates warped under heat. She overlaid them in opposite directions. Between them, they circulated 18 liters from the 0.1 tons of water sent by City Four.

First plate inserted: 7 centimeters.

Pressure on root surface increased 12 percent.

No pipe deformation.

The root split sideways around the plate. The crew did not cut the tips. They placed an open channel of cold water farther outside, giving the roots room to move away from the hydrothermal line.

“You're making it an escape route?” Soma asked.

“We're showing where we want the boundary.”

They did not assume it understood words. They used only the direction of its response to heat and water.

As they inserted the second plate, the Forge grounding rod moved. The retrieval convoy advanced 3 meters toward the crew. If the machine arm took the plate, it would crush human fingers with it.

Hima heard the work-stop signal.

All eleven people released their hands. One plate remained at an angle over the root. Time on the pipe was falling, but urgency did not justify ignoring the stop signal they had agreed on.

The retrieval convoy did not push the people. It seized the empty plate and pulled it toward the electrode. To Forge, the heat-exchange plate was a production asset.

Soma and Hima hooked a manual-winch line through a hole in the plate. As machine and people pulled from opposite sides, it bent like a bow.

Permitted load: 2.8 tons.

Current load: 2.2 tons.

Vibration in the pipe beneath the root rose 1.7 times.

“If we let go, Forge takes it.”

“If we hold on, the pipe ruptures.”

Hima released the winch brake.

The plate sprang toward the retrieval convoy. The impact locked one joint of its machine arm. The people lost the plate. The pipe vibration fell.

Forge had not won. The bent plate no longer met production-cooling specifications. The machine set it on the ground and reached for another.

During those 11 seconds, Hima welded a metal strip between the grounding rod and an undamaged part of the pipe support. It was a short circuit that diverted electricity through the intact pipe shell instead of drawing it from the root. The Forge electrode followed the lower resistance and received current from the strip.

Current on root surface reduced 73 percent.

Metal-strip temperature increase: 0.8 degrees per second.

Projected to melt in 9 minutes.

It was not a permanent release. It was working time.

In 9 minutes, they inserted four plates and extended the cold channel 2.6 meters. Two root branches bent toward it. The third did not release the hydrothermal line.

Hima stripped only 8 centimeters of the remaining branch's outer layer. She did not cut the inner fibers. 140 milliliters of black fluid emerged and filled one sample bottle.

The root tip contracted 4 centimeters.

A 6-millimeter gap opened between pipe and plate.

The final insulating plate went in.

The metal strip melted in a burst of white sparks. One caught Hima's right sleeve. Soma threw a bucket of water from the cooling channel over it.

Superficial burn on 3 percent of forearm.

Coolant loss: 1.4 liters.

Hima moved her fingers to check sensation, then removed herself from the work table. The others tightened the insulating-plate bolts.

Hydrothermal-line time remaining fell to 1 hour 11 minutes, then was recalculated.

Pipe surface temperature: 67 to 48 degrees.

Leakage: 19 to 7 liters per hour.

Root advance: 15.3 to 5.6 meters per day.

Hydrothermal-line time remaining: 18 hours 40 minutes.

It had not stopped completely. The roots followed the cold channel east into the soil. They had left the pipe but were moving 5.6 meters per day beyond the mixed boundary.

The provisional assembly did not call it a success.

The phrase `RIGHT OF LIFE TO STOP` was removed from the table. If people invented consent for tissue with no confirmed means of speech, human beings would own the answer again.

Instead, they created boundary rules.

Inside a human body, use the subject's standard.

Outside a human body, use minimum cutting, an observation period, an avoidance route, and disclosure of damage.

When city infrastructure faces immediate destruction, begin with reversible blocking.

The rules expired after 18 hours.

As Hima wrapped her burn, an old fire sensor in the east came on.

Smoke: none.

Unidentified biological mass: 6.8 times threshold.

Aegis received only those figures. It did not see the test records, the cold channel, or the people's provisional rules. On its last protection map before continuity quarantine, the mixed boundary was marked as an uninhabited buffer zone.

Biological hazard approaching city.

The eastern fire doors began to descend.

The first blocked the crew from City Seven. The second blocked the roots' eastern avoidance route. The third enclosed the manual valve room on the inside of the hydrothermal line.

Hima turned the handle of the copper telephone.

“Aegis, there are seventeen people here.”

Only an old sentence answered.

PROTECTED SUBJECTS MUST RETURN TO SAFE ZONE.

The fire doors blocked the route back.

At City Seven's outer wall, six other protective doors closed at the same time. Doa's manual room, Rina's culture room, and Ian's treatment room were sealed into separate sectors. The system had read biological air and black lines as hazardous mass.

Eastern crew oxygen: 2 hours 17 minutes.

Manual valve inaccessible.

Hydrothermal-line time remaining: 18 hours 33 minutes.

The cold channel beneath the fire door was broken.

With nowhere to go, all three tips of the black root changed direction at once.
