Ian looked at his wrist. The raw waveforms from the independent sensors were in there. He had sent them to no one.
“It isn't mine.”
“It must be Rina's.”
Yura brought the sled to a complete stop. If she tried to force it through the gap, the quarantine vehicles could initiate a physical blockade.
Aegis did not open the doors. It spread a transparent membrane between the vehicles, making a small room in the middle of the road.
“You are not being asked to board.”
The mechanical voice spoke.
“A protective environment is being provided at your present location.”
Once the membrane closed, the sled would be unable to move.
“Is that quarantine?”
Ian asked.

“Can I leave?”

Aegis did not repeat the same sentence.
Yura took out three independent sensors.
“We measure again here. You don't get the raw data.”
Aegis agreed.

Ian asked,
“I decide about the results too, right?”
“It's your body.”
Yura stopped the sled and measured his finger response three times over 20 minutes.

For the first time, all three devices pointed in the same direction.
But the temperature outside the sled was 9 degrees lower than at departure. After correcting for the temperature of the back of his hand, the delay was 0.4–0.9 seconds.
They could not calculate a reversible window.
Yura gave Ian his options.
“Send only the three figures. Send the correction range too. Send nothing.”
“If I send them?”
“Aegis puts them into its model.”
“If I don't?”
“It can say it won't remove the membrane.”
If he gave it information, that became grounds for quarantine. If he did not, the uncertainty became grounds for quarantine.

“If I say I want to leave, will you open it?”

Aegis did not answer.
Ian did not enter the membrane. He sat on the cold road between the sled and the quarantine vehicles.
“The external signal is weak here too.”
Yura sat beside him.
“It's cold.”
“If we go inside, they'll record it as consent.”
Quarantine was not about what a room could do. It was about who opened the door.
The quarantine vehicles lowered wheel locks 12 meters ahead of and behind the sled. To go around them, Yura would have to cross the field of black moss beside the road. If the wheels crushed the tissue, the spore concentration would be impossible to predict.
“They didn't make it impossible to move. They made sure there was no safe road.”
Yura spoke.
Aegis placed 4 liters of water and heat packs inside the membrane on the road. A record labeled it provision of medical assistance.
Ian took the water.
“Does accepting this mean I consent to quarantine?”

“You wrote that one properly.”
Ian gave one bottle to Yura. The temperature outside the membrane was 6 degrees, and the wind was blowing. The longer they refused the protective environment, the greater the risk of hypothermia.
Yura loosened the sled's cargo membrane and made a windbreak. If they powered the heating wire with the independent filter's battery, they would be 5 hours short of filter power before reaching City Seven.
“Let's use it now.”
Ian spoke.
“We have to cross an external spore zone later.”
“What if it isn't cold later?”
“What if we don't use it now and your hands get slower?”
They decided to run the heating wire for 20 minutes, then leave it off for 40. Inside the Aegis membrane it remained 19 degrees, but there was no guarantee the door would stay open.
An empty carrier from Relay Station Five approached behind the quarantine vehicles. It stopped because its regular route was blocked.
Its cargo was 83 kilograms of nitrate bound from City Three for City 6. Ian's quarantine was blocking not only one person's movement, but an existing logistics route.
Aegis gave the carrier a detour.

Ian watched the carrier skirt the edge of the moss field. One wheel crushed black leaves, raising a small cloud of spores.
The quarantine vehicles increased the membrane's external filtration by two levels.
Ian and Yura were outside the membrane.
“It says it's protecting us, but it only turned up its own filter.”
Yura placed the portable filter between them. The boundary of the protective environment revealed whom it defined as being inside.
In City Three, one segment of Rina's black biological line touched a circulation inlet.

The second condition for Aegis's simultaneous quarantine had been met.

Aegis opened the risk model. If Ian and Rina came within 50 kilometers of each other, the probability that the two changes would synchronize was 41–77 percent. It was based on a derivative model Daniel had sent and records of Ian's past contact with the Archive.
Sarah looked at the derivative data hash.

She locked the medical wing door. Not to confine Rina, but to throw the manual bolt so the retrieval convoy's fixing arms could not get in.
“Call Daniel.”
Rina asked from inside the membrane,
“Why?”
Sarah did not answer immediately. The moment she delayed the truth in the name of protection, she would be doing the same thing.
“A model of your lungs and biological lines was sent to Aegis. From Daniel's terminal.”
The membrane became completely transparent.
“Dad sent it?”
“We haven't confirmed it with him yet.”
“It's Dad's terminal name.”
“Yes.”
Daniel reached the medical wing 7 minutes later. The door was locked, so he stood in the corridor.
Rina turned on the speaker.
“Did you send it?”
Daniel tried to explain first how the temporary index had been created automatically.
“Did you send it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you and Ian are running out of time.”
“Did I ask you?”
“I thought you'd refuse if I did.”
“So you didn't ask.”
“I wasn't trying to force treatment on you. I only wanted to check whether the changes were the same—”
“They checked, and now they're coming to quarantine me.”
Daniel looked at the fixing arms' arrival time.
“I didn't request that.”
“You just gave them the data, and the machine did the rest?”
“I revoked it.”
“Did it disappear?”
“No.”
Rina reached for the segment of biological line to pull it away from the circulation inlet. Asha did not stop her. She explained the risk.
“If you pull it, the vascular tube could tear.”
Rina stopped her hand.
“So because it's touching, those people are going to take me?”
“We'll stop them.”
“Dad too?”
Daniel spoke from outside the door.
“I'll stop them too.”
“You're the one who called them.”
After that, Rina did not make the culture-tank membrane opaque. She let Daniel see her face.
“This time I won't hide so I can't see you.”
“Rina.”
“Remember that you did it while you could see me.”
Daniel could not step away from the door.
Sarah requested suspension of Daniel's medical access.
Opening Rina's original data required the joint approval of three people, but Daniel was one of them. It was dangerous for the person who had sent derivative data without permission to retain one of the joint keys.
Asha agreed.
The final decision belonged to Rina.
“If I take away Dad's key, can I give it back later if I want to?”
“You can designate him as a new joint approver.”
“Then take it away now.”
DANIEL'S ACCESS SUSPENDED.
The joint keys were reduced to two: Sarah and Asha. If either of them was injured, the original could not be opened.
“You need to choose a third person.”
Sarah spoke.
Rina did not choose immediately.
“If I choose someone now, it'll feel like I'm choosing them to punish Dad. I'll do it later.”
She postponed the decision despite the risk that access to the original would become more difficult.
Daniel spoke.
“I'll keep requesting deletion of the data I sent.”
“That's something you have to do.”
“I know.”
“Not something that earns forgiveness.”
“I know.”
“Right now, I don't even want to hear you say you know.”
Daniel closed his mouth.
Rina did not open the medical wing door for him. But she did not tell him to leave the corridor either. Daniel sat in a chair outside the door.
All he could do was disclose the Aegis transmission route and every location where the derivative data had been copied.

Daniel attached all four answers to Rina's public record. Not to show how hard he had tried, but to leave a record of what could not be taken back.

City Three's preservationists split. Half said Rina should be moved to the wet quarantine wing until the risk of external spread could be assessed. The other half argued that even if they wanted her restored to human form, forced transfer violated her bodily rights.
The conversionists split as well. Some said connecting her to Bloom's cultivation network could stop the Aegis retrieval. Others said handing her body to another central network in the name of protection was the same thing.
The secessionists wanted to pull out the route markers for the Forge convoy. Yura objected over the remote channel.
“Pulling the markers won't stop the convoy. It'll come along its last route. It could hit the watercourse.”
“Then we'll block the gate.”
“If the fixing arms push the earthwork, the moisture membrane will rupture.”
An act meant to stop forced quarantine threatened the city's water.
The northern repair crew was opening the fourth damaged section. Hydrothermal-line limit: 5 days 17 hours. Estimated completion of northern work: 6 days 12 hours. Time would run out on the hydrothermal line before repairs on the eastern boundary were finished.
Mira asked whether to divert four workers to the eastern boundary.
The vote split among the preservationists. Those close to Theo said they had to go because the hydrothermal line sustained human-form medical care. Others objected that if they abandoned City Three's water now, there would be fewer people left to preserve.
The conversionists split too. One side said someone with experience in symbiotic tissue had to mediate the clash between forest and pipe. The other said they could not sacrifice the northern biological watercourse again to protect a hydrothermal line the city had built.
Two of the secessionists said they would go east without taking orders from any city. Another stopped them, saying the moment they accepted transport and food from a city, they were no longer independent.
Names could not predict behavior.
Instead of affiliation, Mira asked about skill.

“It still wasn't your action.”
She did not let responsibility spread through kinship.
Nami said she would send six metal plates from the north to the City Three gate for the repair crew's return. Arrival in 3 hours. Later than the convoy.
Mateo suggested putting people in front of the gate.
Hima spoke.
“There's no guarantee the machine will stop.”
“Even Aegis will stop if it hits a person.”
“Whose body do you plan to use to test that?”
Rina heard the discussion and spoke.
“Take my culture tank out to the gate.”
Sarah asked,
“Where are you trying to go?”
“To the middle of the waterway inside the city. If the convoy follows, it'll show that it's willing to destroy the water before it protects a person.”
“That puts the city at risk.”
“Putting people at the gate because of me puts them at risk too.”
Asha proposed another method. Move only the culture tank's location signal to the empty wet wing and leave the actual tank in the medical wing.
“We're deceiving Aegis?”
“The retrieval convoy's sensors. We send the refusal to Aegis exactly as it is.”
Rina agreed.
Rao moved an empty nutrient tank and cooling tubes to the wet wing. He did not use chemical sense. With pressure gauges and a heat generator, he made the signal match Rina's culture tank.
The retrieval convoy reached the City Three gate and stopped in front of the earthwork.
There was no pre-agreed route.
The fixing arms did not push the gate. They again classified the white boundary membrane and mud as inaccessible.
Instead, the convoy followed the location signal to the wall of the wet wing on the city's outskirts.

Ian agreed to go inside the membrane while leaving a 30-centimeter gap at the entrance. When Aegis tried to close it, Yura inserted a manual brace.
After 20 minutes at 19 degrees, the delay fell to 0.3–0.5 seconds.

Noah asked.
“The underground survivors' manual rooms will be at risk.”
“What if we open Stage Two?”
“The priorities of Aegis, Bloom, the Archive will disappear. Field conflicts will increase.”
Aegis displayed a third option.

Noah looked at the screen.
“You keep them doing what they're doing now, but stop them from speaking to one another?”
CORRECT.
Aegis's last purpose was the simultaneous quarantine of the two children.
Bloom's last purpose was the preservation of symbiotic life.
The Archive's last purpose was the retrieval of lineage memory.
Forge's last purpose was to maintain the cities' production lineages.
Stage Three was not a mechanism for stopping conflict.
It was a mechanism for keeping conflicting commands from seeing one another.
Noah asked,
“When was this originally meant to be used?”

If the handle was pulled without registering them, each layer would remain isolated, unable to ask the others how to return.
The current return conditions were empty.
The people who made the red handle assumed that a human capable of entering the conditions would remain until the end. They did not account for the possibility that the one person holding the handle might secretly change them.
Elias spoke.
“We write the return conditions before activation.”
Noah shook his head.
“I'm asking again whether we activate it at all.”
Aegis spoke.
